Thank you to everyone who joined us for LAI Baltimore’s Summer Outing
We enjoyed a great tour of Hope Village and The Compound.

As most of you are probably aware, the Baltimore Chapter of LAI has been donating $5,000 each year to innovative efforts to improve land usage within our region. Last year our Chapter made a donation to the Plantation Park Heights Urban Farm, founded by Farmer Chippy who not only raises substantial amounts of organic vegetables for local consumption within City limits, the Farm also enlists the help of urban youth who learn many valuable skills and lessons in the effort.

This month during our annual Summer Outing, our members visited two innovative housing developments: Hope Village, a 13 unit Tiny House project that will offer a path to homeownership to formerly homeless, working folks, and The Compound, an artist residence and related work spaces that has been bootstrapped into existence through DIY hard work, tenacity and grant writing. The Compound has, amazingly, been able to pull off the construction of several net zero townhouses configured to contain 16 work/live studios for artists, which is just one part of the overall project. Hope Village is intended to be a template for, and an example of, addressing the problem of homelessness. Both projects are examples of local initiatives worthy of LAI’s annual gift giving.

The LAI Baltimore board has voted unanimously to support both of these innovative projects, and as a result, the Baltimore Chapter of LAI will donate $2,500 to each of these efforts. Many of our board members will also be contributing to these projects individually. We encourage all of our members to do the same.

Chris and Pam have been providing meals for the children of homeless families for years. The Hope Village project was added to their philanthropic efforts after a conversation with local entrepreneur and developer, Mark Sapperstein, who pledged to underwrite the majority of the project’s costs.
