February 4, 2025 WBAL Article on “Rebuilding the Key Bridge: Governor unveils new design concept”
November 13, 2024, as you may recall, LAI Baltimore hosted a Salon led by Member Klaus Philipsen attended by other LAI members.
The sudden, unexpected and tragic disappearance of the Key Bridge is still reverberating. It inflicted trauma on many people in the Baltimore region for many reasons, including the trauma that the bridge was a fixture and monument deeply ingrained into the physical landscape of our region.
Our Salon gathering gave us an opportunity to look back and forward. We touched on what made the past bridge design stand out, but also vulnerable, and how the incredible recovery and cleanup effort was organized. It gave us a clue on how big projects can be achieved. Most importantly, though we dug in on how the new bridge could once again become a landmark and gateway worthy of our region. The State is employing an innovative “progressive design-build” process to accomplish a rebuild that it believes will not only be rapid but also cost effective, adapted to future demands and attractive.
